Many gardeners are just beginning to understand the value of incorporating native plant species into their landscapes. In fact, some of the nation’s earliest gardeners like George Washington and Thomas Jefferson considered it their patriotic duty to plant natives. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service defines “Native” as: “With respect to a particular ecosystem, a species that, other than as a result of an introduction, historically occurred or currently occurs in that ecosystem.”
